Chelsea Clock Mariner Trophy
The organizers of the Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean Race and the Annapolis to Newport Race are pleased to announce a new competition for boats competing in both events – the Chelsea Clock Mariner Trophy donated by the Chelsea Clock Company. The competition will be for boats that race in the IRC, PHRF, PHRF Cruising Canvas and Double-handed Divisions in both races.

Life Rafts
USA Services, which was a major supplier of rental rafts in Annapolis, has gone out of business. There are several companies that may still have rafts for rent - LRSE in Tiverton, RI; Winslow Life Raft Store in Charleston, SC;and Landrigan in East Boston, MA.

Notice of Race Amendment No. 3
Amendment No. 3 to the Notice of Race has been posted. It clarifies the application of RRS 51, Movable Ballast, and RRS 52, Manual Power, to each of the racing divisions. The Notice of Race incorporating Amendments 1, 2 & 3 has been posted.

Notice of Race Amendments No. 1 and 2
Amendment No.1 to the Notice of Race has been posted. It removes the change to IRC rule 15. Amendment No. 2 to the Notice of Race has been posted. It clarifies the entry fee due date.

Notice of Race
The Notice of Race has been posted. Also posted is the Category 2 Offshore Regulations Compliance Check List. This list includes the Annapolis-Newport prescriptions to the regulations. Online entry is open. There is an option to enter now, but pay later. The entry fee must be paid by 26 May and is not refundable after that date.

Cruiser Division Added for 2011
In addition to IRC, PHRF and IRC Double-Handed Divisions there will be a PHRF Cruiser Division in 2011. This division will provide a home for the more traditional dual purpose boats and passage makers by excluding the light, powered up race boats. To be eligible the boat must have a Displacement to Length Ratio of 200 or greater and a Sail Area to Displacement Ratio of 20 or less. The boats will be allowed only cruising spinnakers.

Boat and Crew Preparation
The December 7th seminar on preparing for the race was very well attended. Reservations were cut off at 100 because of space limitations. Gary Jobson made remarks ranging from strategy, to safety, to crew selection. The three presentations that followed Gary’s remarks are posted. Chip Thayer explained the new Cruiser Division. Jim Mumper’s presentation dealt with boat prep and David Shaeffer covered crew selection and prep. Two of the major take-home messages are: start now with the Offshore Regs Compliance Checklist to identify the tasks needed to prepare the boat and start now to recruit your crew focusing on finding folks with prior offshore experience and the skill sets needed for an offshore race.

New York Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron, in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club have established a new series which includes the Annapolis to Newport Race.

Marion to Bermuda Race
The Marion to Bermuda Race is a classic for cruising yachts. The start on June 17 provides time for boats to complete the Annapolis to Newport Race with plenty of time to join the Marion to Bermuda fleet.

US-IRC Gulfstream Series
The US-IRC Gulf Stream Series is made up of premiere events ranging from the Caribbean up the east coast to Nova Scota. The Annapolis to Newport race is one of the four offshore races included in the series. The other three are the Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race, the RORC Carribean 600 and the Marblehead to Halifax Race. At least one of these races is required to qualify for the series.

Stamford Yacht Club Ocean Racing Series
The Annapolis to Newport race is a qualifier for three series trophies offered by Stamford Yacht Club. Boats racing in the IRC Division are eligible to compete for the Northern Ocean Racing Trophy. Boats in the PHRF Division are eligible to compete for the New England Lighthouse Trophy and boats in the IRC Double-Handed Division are eligible to compete for the Double-Handed Ocean Racing Trophy. 2011 Start Date
The 2011 race will start on Friday 3 June. This will allow participating yachts to also enter the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta presented by Rolex on 10-12 June and the Storm Trysail Club Block Island Race week 19-24 June. The race is a qualifying race for the New York Yacht Club's new Atlantic Ocean Racing Series, the centerpiece of which is the 2011 Transatlantic Race.

27 May Press Release
The course record of 42 hours, 58 minutes, 12 seconds is clearly threatened by entries such as George David’s 91’ maxi Rambler with Peter Isler aboard as navigator and Jim Grundy’s brand new custom Tripp 75 Bella Pita as well as perennial contender for line honors, Jim Muldoon aboard his custom 72’ Donnybrook. Prim, entered by Henry Gibbons-Neff, is a modified Owens 41. Prim’s first Annapolis to Newport Race was in 1955 sailed by Morton Gibbons-Neff Jr. 54 years later this will be her 12th race. She already has two class wins.

Notice of Race Amendments
Amendments 1 & 2 to the Notice of Race have been posted. Amendment No. 1 brings the wording on advertising into conformity with the 2009 ISAF Regulation 20. Offshore Special Regulations
Compliance with the ISAF Special Regulations Governing Offshore Racing (OSR) for Category 2 races is required. The OSR Cat 2 Regs, including the US Prescriptions are available through the link on the right of this page. Entrants will be mailed a copy of the US SAILING Special Regulations booklet. The Annapolis to Newport Race OSR checklist including the additional Annapolis to Newport requirements is posted.

Race Start Date
The date of the start of the 2009 race will be Friday 5 June. The schedule will allow sailing the Annapolis to Newport Race, the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta and Storm Trysail Club's Block Island Race Week. The Annapolis to Newport Race will provide racing in IRC and PHRF Divisions. A Double-Handed Division will race under IRC. The Annapolis to Newport Race is one of the four offshore races in the US-IRC Gulf Stream Series, at least one of which must be sailed to qualify.

ORC Special Regulations
There is an important change included in the 2006-2007 Category 2 ORC Regulations. As originally posted and reported here, 30% of the crew, including the captain, would be required to have safety at sea training within the 5 years before the start of the race. On 12 Dercember ISAF posted an amendment to the Cat 2 ORC Regs changing 30% to 20%. An amendment to the NoR has been posted. US SAILING maintains a schedule of Safety at Sea Seminars.

Double-Handed Seminar
AYC hosted a discussion on double-handed racing on Thursday April 12 from 6:30 to 8:00. The discussion was led by experienced double-handed skipper David Schaeffer. Crew selection, boat preparation and offshore practices were covered.
